I often have people ask me how they should start a blog. Well my friends… it is SUPER EASY!
Before I dive into the step-by-step instructions, we need to discuss WordPress.org vs. WordPress.com.
Often, people have asked me what the difference is between WordPress.org and WordPress.com. Well, if you are just blogging for fun and have no interest in making it a career or earning money while doing so, then .com is the way to go. If you do want to make some money and even make a career out of it WordPress.org is the better choice BUT you need to remember that the self-hosted WordPress (.org) will cost money but it is well worth it in the long run. Now onto the instructions!
Coming up with a domain name…
My domain name is avogueaffair.com. After you come up with some ideas, go to Bluehost Sign Up (looks like the below) and see if your domain name is taken or free to grab up.
The next step on Bluehost is to pick which plan level you would like to do. I did the Starter Plan… but the one thing about the Starter Plan is you pay a lump sum instead of monthly but the good thing about this is you actually save quite a bit of money doing so. Also, I am a beginner in the blogging world so I figured why not start there?
Now we move on to hosting your domain name. Hosting basically means “renting” an area on the web for your blog. You can host with Bluehost AND you would get a free domain name if hosting with them.
Now we move on to installing WordPress.org! WordPress “has grown to be the largest self-hosted blogging tool in the world, used on millions of sites and seen by tens of millions of people every day.”
Start by logging into Bluehost and scroll down until you go to the Website section (see bel0w)
Then go to the Do it yourself area and click on “Install” because its FREE!
It will ask which domain you want to install so make sure you pick your new domain. Then lastly, check “I have read the terms and conditions…” and click Install now.
It will let you know your install is complete. Then make sure to keep track of all of your credentials such as your username, password, etc.. JUST IN CASE!
Go ahead and type your Admin URL into the browser. For example… www.yourdomainname.com/wp-admin then log in with your username and password.
The last steps of creating your blog is to pick a theme and design the overall blog. I thought this was most definitely the FUN part!
It took me a while but I finally decided on the “Fun WordPress Theme” ($59.99) which is a theme of Genesis ($59.95). Genesis is the framework and the Fun WordPress Theme is the child theme. You will also want to check out the StudioPress Themes.
